DPNM: CBO Confirms Senate Healthcare Repeal Takes Healthcare Away from New Mexicans

New Mexico – Today, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) announced that at least 22 million Americans are expected to lose their health coverage under the Senate Republican healthcare repeal. In response to the CBO score, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico (DPNM) Richard Ellenberg released the following statement:

“The CBO confirms that the Senate healthcare repeal takes healthcare away from New Mexico families. The bill will take us back to the days where people with preexisting conditions weren’t able to get covered, women were forced to pay more, and healthcare was out of reach for many New Mexicans. The bill also threatens maternity care, substance-abuse addiction treatment, mental health services, and our economy.

“Democrats will be fighting to protect the gains our state has seen under the Affordable Care Act, and expand coverage for New Mexicans in every corner of the state.”

The events served as a forum for people to share their stories and explain what the healthcare repeal would mean to the people we know in our communities.

Democratic Party of NM Statement on Senate Republican Healthcare Bill

New Mexico – The Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Richard Ellenberg released to following statement after Senate Republicans released the healthcare bill they drafted behind closed doors:

“Republicans are actively working to take away the health care many New Mexicans rely on to stay healthy. Under the Republican plan children will go without doctor appointments, rural hospitals will be forced to close, and heath care professionals in our state will see their jobs disappear. .

“Governor Martinez and Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez have remained silent on healthcare, instead of standing up to protect healthcare for New Mexicans in every corner of the state. And Steve Pearce has already made it very clear that he is willing to kick people off their healthcare coverage.

“We need everyone to come together to build on the progress our state has seen under the Affordable Care Act and to increase health care access for all New Mexicans ”

On Saturday, New Mexicans showed that they’re watching the secretive health care process closely, and they stood up against Trumpcare at 20 simultaneous events throughout the state. The Democratic Party of New Mexico, Indivisible, Progressive Democrats of America, and Working Families Party teamed up to organize the events, which served as forums for New Mexicans to share their stories and support healthcare access for all New Mexicans.

New Mexicans across the state are at risk of losing their healthcare through the Republicans’ plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which will demolish Medicaid expansion, remove protections for those with preexisting conditions, kick students off their parents’ plans, and take away essential funding for rural health clinics.

If Trumpcare becomes law:

  • Medicaid will undergo unsustainable cuts, which puts 336,000 New Mexico kids at risk of losing health care.
  • Premiums on older Americans will skyrocket.
  • Individuals with pre-existing conditions will be subject to faulty and expensive high-risk pools.
  • Insurance companies will be able institute lifetime limits on coverage, even on those with chronic illnesses.

DPNM: Violence Is Not the Answer

New Mexico – The Democratic Party of New Mexico released the following statement on Congressional shooting in Virginia:

“This morning’s events shocked the country, and as Democrats we stand firmly against violence. Our thoughts are with the families, staff members, and Congress members who were directly involved. Though we are in contentious political times, violence is not the answer.”

State Rank on Child Well-Being Reveals Failure of Republican Policies, Success of Democratic Initiatives

State Rank on Child Well-Being Reveals Failure of Republican Policies, Success of Democratic Initiatives

New Mexico – Today, New Mexico’s rank in child well-being revealed a dramatic contrast between the failure of Republican policies and success of Democratic initiatives.

Democratic Party of New Mexico Chair Richard Ellenberg highlighted the stark difference between the policies saying, “Democrats believe that New Mexicans are resilient and powerful, and we can work to increase opportunities and improve the quality of life for everyone. This report makes it clear that Democratic policies improve the lives of our children and have a positive impact on New Mexico families; where as, Republican policies in education have kept our state at the bottom. The contrast couldn’t be more clear.”

According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Kids Count Data Book, New Mexico remains dead last in education—an area the Martinez-Sanchez administration has taken steps to privatize, increase testing and push teachers out of the profession. On the other hand, child health has seen significant gains—largely due to greater access to health services through the Affordable Care Act.
