Pearce Refuses to Call Out President Trump on Use of Racial Slur

New Mexico – Today, the Democratic Party of New Mexico called on Steve Pearce to denounce the President for using a racial slur during a ceremony honoring Navajo Code Talkers. Democratic members of the congressional delegation, the President of the Navajo Nation, and the families of the Navajo Code Talkers have all expressed disgust with President Trump’s derogatory use of the name Pocahontas–Steve Pearce remains silent on the issue.

“It is an insult to the Code Talkers to use a racial slur during a ceremony in their honor. Steve Pearce wants to be the governor of our great state, but he refuses to stand up for our communities. It’s clear the Steve Pearce is more concerned about his friend Donald Trump than the Navajo Code Talkers who served our country honorably and the many Native American families who call New Mexico home,” said Richard Ellenberg, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.

Last year, during President Trump’s campaign against people of color, he took to calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’, and even then Steve Pearce refused to comment on then-candidate Trump’s use of the name as an insult. Moreover, a report published today, Pearce’s office refused to comment on Trump’s use of a racial slur when asked directly.

The Navajo Code Talkers played a pivotal role in World War II using Diné to conduct military operations and protect strategic intelligence from being decoded by enemy forces.
