The U.S. Supreme Court lets decision striking Voter ID law stand
New Mexico – Today, the Democratic Party of New Mexico (DPNM) celebrated the U.S. Supreme Court determination to let appellate court decision striking North Carolina Voter ID law stand.
“This is a huge victory for voters in New Mexico and across the country. We know that voter ID laws are thinly veiled voter suppression tactics that Republicans have been pushing for years, and today’s update from the Supreme Court is a massive blow to Republican efforts to restrict access to the ballot.” said DPNM Chair Richard Ellenberg. “Democrats are committed to ensuring everyone who is eligible to vote can vote without barriers aimed at lowering voter turnout.”
Voter ID laws have been proven to disproportionately affect low income individuals, Hispanic, Native American, and African American communities and the elderly. Though voter fraud is virtually nonexistent, Republicans continue to push the policy, and in 2016 Republican officials admitted that Voter ID laws were part of a strategy to undermine citizens’ rights to vote for political gain.
In New Mexico’s Secretary of State race, the Republican candidate rallied for Voter ID, which would effectively disenfranchise New Mexico voters in every corner of the state.
