Be A Party Leader: Guide to Running for a DPNM Office

Be A Party Leader

We need Democrats across New Mexico to step up to be leaders in our party. Whether you want to lead your local precinct or serve as a state party officer, there is a place for you and your talents!

The Democratic Party of New Mexico is governed by a State Party chair, Party officers, and the State Central Committee members (SCC), all of whom are elected at the SCC Meeting every two years. These elections will take place on April 29th, 2017 in Albuquerque. The SCC is comprised of Democrats from each county across our state. At the local level, the party is governed by County officers and ward/precinct captains.

To lead the party at any level you must be a registered Democrat committed to the election of each and every Democratic nominee for public office.

Ward/Precinct Elections

One of the best ways to get involved on a grassroots level is to serve as a ward/precinct officer. Precinct chair responsibilities include organizing neighborhood phone banks, door knocking events, and assisting with County Party events. In order to run, show up to your ward/precinct elections this Spring. To learn about the date, time, and place of your meeting, reach out to your local county party or contact us here at DPNM so we can put you in touch with the right people!

At your local meeting, you will also vote to elect Democrats to represent your community on the County Central Committee. The County Central Committee is empowered to govern the county party and its members will vote for County Party officers as well as State Central Committee members.

County Party Elections

In each odd number year, the County Central Committee will convene to elect their County Party leadership and State Central Committee members. These meetings will take place between March 18th and April 8th. Please reach out to your local county party or contact us here at DPNM so we can put you in touch with the right people to get the precise information.

State Central Committee Meeting

At the 2017 Spring State Central Committee Meeting, State Central Committee members elect the chair, vice chair, treasurer and secretary of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. This meeting will be held in Albuquerque on April 29th (specific location will be announced soon).

The State Central Committee meets twice a year, according to the Democratic Party of New Mexico Rules. The SCC is the supreme governing body of Democratic Party of New Mexico.

For specific job descriptions of party officers as well as rules explaining the voting process at any of these meetings, please refer to the Rules of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.
