Congressman Steve Pearce Leads Effort to Gut Office that Holds Congress Members Accountable

New Mexico – This morning, the Democratic Party of New Mexico called out Congressman Steve Pearce for his efforts to gut the independent office that works as a watchdog to keep corruption out of Congress. The measure approved by U.S. House Judiciary Committee was brought forward by Pearce and three other Republican congressman and would ultimately give congress the power to investigate itself.

“If Steve Pearce wants to eliminate the office that holds members of Congress accountable, we can’t help but wonder what Steve Pearce has to hide,” said Debra Haaland, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “With a Trump presidency on the horizon, oversight is now more important than ever, and Congressman Pearce embarrasses our state when he takes action that appears to be purely self interested.”

Congressman Pearce first targeted the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) in 2015 after an employee was investigated for misconduct. Pearce pushed the measure to gut the investigative body in 2016, and continued to work to eliminate oversight of Congress in the first week of the 115th Congress.
