Democratic Secretary of State-elect Maggie Toulouse Oliver Officially Sworn In after Running Campaign on Transparency, Fair Elections

New Mexico – Today, Democratic Secretary of State-elect Maggie Toulouse Oliver was officially sworn in Santa Fe. Maggie Toulouse Oliver ran her campaign on government transparency and fair elections.

“We are ecstatic that Maggie Toulouse Oliver took the oath of office today,” said Debra Haaland, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Not only has she successfully run elections in Bernalillo County, she also has the integrity to build trust in government on a statewide level. The Democratic Party of New Mexico congratulates Maggie Toulouse Oliver, and we are proud to call her New Mexico’s Secretary of State.”

The 2016 Secretary of State race was a result of former Republican Secretary of State Diana Duran’s resignation. Maggie Toulouse Oliver defeated Republican Nora Espinoza 56 percent to 44 percent and received the most votes of any candidate running a statewide election.

During this election, New Mexico voters affirmed that in New Mexico we value inclusive Democratic policies that seek to lift all New Mexicans up rather than tear each other down. Toulouse Oliver’s election is an example of New Mexico’s direct rejection of Republicans’ extreme agenda.
