DPNM Calls for Focus on the Budget During Special Session

New Mexico – Today, the Democratic Party of New Mexico called for focus on the budget after Governor Martinez signed a special session proclamation upon returning from a trip to Texas.

“Governor Martinez has a record of misplaced priorities and she continues to show a lack of concern for the serious situation we find our state in by adding non-budget items to the special session. Right now, we need to focus on the budget, and Governor Martinez is trying to distract the public from her failed economic agenda,” said Juan Sanchez III, Vice-Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.

After Governor Martinez returned from a political trip to Dallas, she signed a proclamation calling for a special session. New Mexico faces a shortfall of $223 million for FY2016 and an estimated shortfall of $431 million for FY2017.

The Senate proactively called for a special session in July of this year, and Governor Martinez spent more than two months traveling outside the state for political fundraisers for candidates in other states. The Governor’s political trips outside the state, have cost taxpayers approximately $26,000 in the first half of this year.
