Despite Comments Made on Fallen Muslim Soldier’s Parents, NM GOP Still Backs Donald Trump

Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, the Democratic Party of New Mexico pointed out that the New Mexico GOP remains silent on their support for Republican nominee Donald Trump, despite the abhorrent comments he made following the speech of fallen Muslim soldier’s parents at the Democratic National Convention.

“Army Captain Humayun Khan died for our country, and his parents lost their son. I’m the daughter of a Vietnam combat veteran, and to see Donald Trump pay so little respect to family who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom is utterly detestable, and what’s worse is that he has no remorse for his comments. New Mexico has a strong tradition of service, and our veterans deserve respect from our candidates—I expect the New Mexico GOP to hold their nominee accountable for his hateful rhetoric, but have yet to see them come out against it. If this is a signal of how Republican leaders are going to treat our Gold Star families, we need to make sure Democrats get elected up and down the ballot in 2016,” said Debra Haaland, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.

During the Democratic National Convention, the parents of fallen Muslim Army Captain Humayun Khan delivered remarks expressing the serious nature of Donald Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric. Immediately, Donald Trump came out attacking the Gold Star family on Twitter and later in televised interviews. Despite many GOP leaders coming out against Trump’s rhetoric, the New Mexico GOP remains silent on this issue.
