New Mexico GOP Attempts to Cover for Espinoza’s Refusal to Answer for Ethics Vote, Record with Smear Attack

Albuquerque, N.M. – In a transparent political attack to cover for negative news stories about Nora Espinoza running from her legislative record–including a missed ethics vote that Espinoza refuses to answer questions about–the Republican Party of New Mexico on Thursdaylaunched a negative smear against Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver.

“What I find most absurd is that the GOP is attacking someone with nine years of election administration experience when their candidate has exactly zero experience overseeing elections,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Debra Haaland. “Nora Espinoza was nothing more than a partisan ideologue in the legislature and now she is running as fast as she can from her extreme record. Espinoza is even hiding from questions about a missed ethics vote. Why? Voters deserve answers, not political games.”

Records show that Espinoza failed to propose any legislation related to elections during her nearly a decade in the Legislature until after she announced she was running for Secretary of State.

“In the wake of Dianna Duran’s indictment, arrest and prison sentence for fraud and embezzlement, New Mexico families need accountable leadership,” Chairwoman Haaland said. “Maggie Toulouse Oliver is a leading expert on elections not just for our state, but also for the nation. Maggie Toulouse Oliver took immediate action to correct any and all voting issues that arose during her tenure running elections in Bernalillo County – which accounts for approximately one third of all voters in New Mexico. The Republican Party wants to smear her record because they know that Maggie will continue taking action and rooting out corruption in government. As Secretary of State, Maggie will ensure New Mexico elections are fair and honest.”
