Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, the Democratic Party of New Mexico slammed Representative Steve Pearce and Republicans in Congress for playing politics on emergency funding to address the threat of Zika. While New Mexico struggles to protect residents from the Zika Virus. Pearce obstructed the passage of the funding by voting for the House Republican’s bill that included irrelevant provisions regarding Planned Parenthood and the Confederate flag, instead of addressing the issue head on.
“Congressman Pearce showed us this week that he is more worried about politics than addressing the threat our state faces when it comes to Zika,” said Debra Haaland, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “It’s ironic that Congressman Pearce would vote to limit the scope of organization that promotes health during pregnancy, which is exactly what’s at risk if Zika has a chance to spread in our country.”
According to the New Mexico Department of Health, New Mexico has already had three cases of the Zika.
