Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, Juan Sanchez III, Vice-Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico, called on Nora Espinoza to answer for her call to ban Hispanic history books in schools, saying that Espinoza’s opposition to honoring the state’s Hispanic heritage puts her in lock-step with the anti-Hispanic rhetoric of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
“New Mexico has a rich Hispanic history that we can be proud of,” Juan Sanchez III, Vice-Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico said. “The fact that Nora Espinoza does not honor New Mexico’s Hispanic heritage–and wants to ban books about that history from our schools–speaks volumes about her character. We don’t need another Secretary of State with poor judgment. Nora Espinoza’s Trump-like values are wrong for New Mexico.”
In direct contrast with Nora Espinoza’s opposition to Hispanic literature being available in schools, Democrat Maggie Toulouse Oliver embraces New Mexico’s heritage and speaks fluent Spanish. She even started her campaign by reaching out directly to Spanish-speaking New Mexicans.
