New Mexico Democratic Leaders Condemn Trump’s Racist Rhetoric, Call on Governor Martinez to Reject Trump’s Request for Endorsement

Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, Congressman Ben Ray Luján, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham, and N.M. Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez released the following statement condemning Trump’s racist rhetoric and called on Governor Martinez to reject Trump’s request for an endorsement.

“From the outset of his candidacy, Donald Trump has waged a campaign to malign Hispanics, along with many others – veterans, women, and Muslims – regardless of political party. His recent comments attacking Federal Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel are nothing short of racist and are the latest in a long line of bigoted remarks. As Hispanic leaders of our state, we reject Trump’s hateful and racist rhetoric and his efforts to divide communities.

“Likewise, we strongly urge Governor Susana Martinez and the New Mexico Republican Party to take a stand against Trump. It is inconceivable that they would seriously contemplate a political endorsement of a man who shows nothing but contempt and disrespect for New Mexico and its people. It is long past time for Governor Martinez to repudiate Trump and his brand of racism and separate New Mexico and herself from that racism by rejecting Trump’s request for an endorsement. New Mexico deserves better.”
