Auditor’s findings show Secretary of State’s Office Fails to Plan for Elections, emphasizing the need to elect Maggie Toulouse Oliver as Secretary of State
Albuquerque, N.M. – The Democratic Party of New Mexico commended State Auditor Tim Keller for his efforts to protect New Mexico voters from bad planning at the Secretary of State’s (SOS) office and emphasized the need to elect Maggie Toulouse Oliver as Secretary of State.
Earlier this week, State Auditor Keller released findings that the Secretary of State’s office routinely uses emergency funding measures to fund elections putting New Mexico’s elections in financial risk.
“Auditor Keller is doing a great job safeguarding taxpayers in New Mexico, and his finding that the Secretary of State’s office is failing to plan for elections is no different. It defies commonsense that the Secretary of State depends on emergency funding to allow New Mexicans to cast their vote. That’s why we need Maggie Toulouse Oliver in the Secretary of State’s office. Maggie will make sure we plan ahead for our elections, so voters and candidates have a reliable election system,” said Debra Haaland, Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. “Governor Martinez’s administration continues to deal with budget shortfalls in the same way–they simply refuse to fund important programs, and it’s unacceptable. We should look to increase our revenues instead of giving corporations the upper hand in our state.”
