DPNM Statement in Response to Gov. Again Misleading Public – This Time About Real ID

Today, The Democratic Party of New Mexico released the following statement in response to Governor Martinez’s repeated misleading of the public.

“Gov. Susana Martinez is again trying to distract New Mexicans from the failures of her administration. She continues to try to scare the public by spreading information about Real ID compliance that is patently false.

“Instead of using alarmist tactics, Gov. Martinez should finally start to focus on creating and protecting jobs in our state. There is no excuse for her dissemination of false information and continued insistence that New Mexicans need to obtain passports for air travel.

“The governor’s failure to lead on Real ID, and her ongoing pattern of not telling the truth, has real consequences for working families. Gov. Susana Martinez needs to tell the truth: New Mexicans are clear to fly, but hardworking New Mexicans are still waiting for the jobs they need because of Gov. Martinez inability to lead.”

From The Associated Press, January 8, 2016

“But Friday afternoon, the Department of Homeland Security said that passengers could continue using their current IDs until Jan. 22, 2018. Some would have until Oct. 1, 2020.”

From Mike Lonergan, spokesman, Governor Martinez, January 8, 2016

“This is the federal government confirming that because Democrats in the Legislature have insisted on giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, New Mexicans will have to buy a passport to board an aircraft. It’s unfair that New Mexicans are being punished for the obstructionism of the Democrats in the Legislature. For years, they ignored the public and the problem, then they tried to convince everyone there wasn’t a problem, and now they’re playing games and refusing to seriously solve the problem.”
