Gov. Martinez Directed Campaign Money to Illegal Shell Company, Breaches Public Trust

This morning, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported that Governor Martinez, through her Political Action Committee, directed funds to illegal shell companies managed by her political consultant, Jay McCleskey. This news comes on the heels of news of an FBI investigation into the Governor’s political fundraising activities. Earlier this week, Governor Martinez doubled down on her support of McCleskey confirming that they talk ‘every single day’ and expressing confidence that he has not ‘done anything wrong.’

“After learning this morning that Governor Martinez’s own PAC helped create illegal shell companies to hide political dollars, it is no wonder there is an FBI investigation. Purposefully laundering campaign funds through fake corporations to fool the public is clearly a breach of trust and a serious ethical violation. Instead of trying to sweep this under the rug, Governor Martinez needs to explain why she helped create this illegal scheme to mislead New Mexican voters about her political machine,” said Democratic Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Debra Haaland.
