Debra Haaland: Weekly Update

Dear Democrats,

This past week was a hectic one. The DPNM staff and I attended the DNC meeting in Minneapolis, and we are excited to report that New Mexico is receiving a great amount of attention from our colleagues across the country. I met personally with DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and representatives of the major Presidential campaigns to discuss strategies for our state. I invited all of our talented candidates to New Mexico and promised a warm welcome when they arrive. Another major topic was the national convention in Philadelphia next year. I’m pleased to report that New Mexico drew 3rd in the lottery for preferred hotel space! That means it’s very likely we’ll have a great hotel right in the center of all the action!

While I was representing our state at the national level, our Attorney General, Hector Balderas, stayed busy here in New Mexico as he filed criminal charges against Republican Secretary of State Dianna Duran. This is yet another example of the Republican war on good government and why it’s so important that we fight hard every day to make sure we take back the State House and hold the State Senate next year. We wish the Attorney General well on his thoughtful, fact-based prosecution and are grateful for his leadership.

On a personal note, I’d like to offer my condolences to the friends and family of a Democratic warrior and champion from Chaves County, Ms. Eva Gomez. Eva left us last week, and behind her a legacy of caring about her community, her family, and her children. Eva was an educator, a member of NEA and former President of the Roswell Education Association, and recently Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Chaves County. She was a great Democrat, a tireless contributor to her community and she will be missed by many.

Last, I wish to announce the newly elected Chairwoman of the Native American Democratic Caucus of New Mexico, Rachael Riley (Mescalero Apache/Laguna Pueblo). Rachael has been extremely active for the past three years on candidate and issue campaigns and is a top notch grassroots organizer. Please keep an eye on our website for her bio and photo!

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on the trail!

In your service,

Deb
