A Message From Chairwoman Haaland

From Chairwoman Debra Haaland:

Today I am going to Santa Fe to oppose the New Mexico Human Services Department proposal to expand mandatory work activities in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Employment & Training program to the following populations:
– teenagers without children 16 to 18
– adults without children age 50 to 60
– adults 16 to 60 who have children over age six

I oppose this namely because the program is not required by federal law, but also because NM has an incredibly high poverty rate, a void of available jobs, and I do not believe this program will assist folks in finding jobs. Next, the HSD has not produced any cost/benefit ratio data that indicates the program works or will work. This program will inevitably hurt children when their parents are kicked off SNAP

If you’d also like to voice your opposition, the public hearing regarding SNAP and the proposed work requirement is:
TODAY Friday, July 17
1:30-4:30 p.m.
DOH Harold Runnels Auditorium, 1190 St. Francis Dr., Santa Fe.
