Statement from Chairwoman Haaland Regarding Governor’s Inflated Tourism Numbers

Calls numbers ‘grossly exaggerated’

Democratic Party of New Mexico State Chairwoman Debra Haaland has issued the following statement regarding the Governor’s inflated tourism numbers:

“Governor Martinez recently called a news conference and gave her administration credit for what was hailed as a major increase in New Mexico tourism. However, as documented by the Albuquerque Free Press, the size of the purported increase was, at best, grossly exaggerated. 30% of the tourism visits touted were from New Mexicans, and more than half of the total visits sited were made by day trippers, i.e. those who did not stay overnight and in many cases were simply entering the state as part of a cross-country trip.”

“This sort of grandstanding for media attention is indicative of the governor’s willingness to play fast and loose with the facts in the desperate attempt to generate positive publicity while New Mexico continues to struggle to recover from the Great Recession and is among the nation’s leading states in poverty and childhood hunger. I hope that in the future the Governor will focus less on looking good on camera, and more on doing good for the people of New Mexico.”
