Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement after House Republicans stopped debate on the Interior appropriations bill over amendments to remove the Confederate Battle Flag from national parks.
“Republicans didn’t pull the Interior bill because it cuts funding for clean water. Republicans didn’t pull the bill because it takes us backward in our fight against climate change. Republicans pulled the bill because their members would not support something that said Americans will no longer tolerate the symbol of oppression and racism that is the Confederate Battle Flag.
“It is shameful that on the very day South Carolina acted to take down the flag, House Republicans are standing up for the Confederate Battle Flag and the intolerance it represents.”
