Last night, President Obama delivered the 2014 State of the Union address, in which he laid out the Democratic vision of opportunity, action, and optimism for the United States.
Meanwhile, Republicans, like Governor Martinez, continue to push their out of touch obstructionist policies that put politics before people.
Five years after the President inherited the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, American businesses have created more than eight million new jobs in the past 46 months, and they’re primed to create more.
Except in New Mexico. Thanks to Governor Martinez inaction, New Mexico ranks dead last in job growth.
President Obama has been clear that helping more Americans get into the middle class is a top priority, and raising the minimum wage is one important way to do that.
Except in New Mexico. Governor Martinez vetoed a minimum wage increase last year. This year, Democrats are supporting a constitutional amendment that would go straight to the voters, avoiding action by Governor Martinez and her wealthy business interests.
The American people stand with Democrats and the President on this issue – 73% of Americans support raising the minimum wage.
If Congressman Steve Pearce and House Republicans won’t act to help American families, President Obama will. That’s why the President announced that he will use his executive authority to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 for those working on new federal contracts for services.
President Obama is working hard to build a future that will help New Mexico families’ increase their wages, enjoy the benefits of affordable health care and ensure that our kids have a world class education. That’s leadership.
Governor Martinez’s State of the State?
- More attacks on undocumented immigrants
- 50th in nation for the overall well-being of children (Annie E. Casey Foundation)
- 1st in nation for child hunger; 2nd in nation for adult hunger (Feeding America study)
- Worst New Mexico economy in 80 years, huge job and population losses, record commercial real estate vacancies
Once again, the Republican Party is demonstrating their commitment to a far right ideology that doesn’t help working Americans.
President Obama and DPNM are building a better future, starting now.
