After their defeat in 2012, Republicans pledged to change and modernize their party but it’s clear that today’s GOP is still the Same Old Party that voters rejected in the last election.
New Mexico’s Congressman Steve Pearce (R-CD2) tells us in his recently released book, “The wife is to voluntarily submit, just as her husband is to lovingly lead and sacrifice.”
Then yesterday, Pearce’s Republican colleague from Texas, Congressman Louis Gomert (R-TX) said that the federal government uses welfare to “lure” women into “servitude.” Gomert was defending a speech he gave earlier this month on the House floor when he said, “I heard the story over and over and over, how as a young girl in high school she was bored with high school and someone suggested, ‘Well, why don’t you just drop out of high school and have a baby and then the government will send you a check?'” he said on the House floor. “It began to really eat away with me that in the ’60s the federal government, desiring to help poor moms who were dealing with deadbeat dads that weren’t helping, decided, ‘We’ll help, we’ll give a check for every child you can have out of wedlock.'”
Also on Thursday, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) said that the government shouldn’t help women who can’t control their “libido or their reproductive system” by providing co-pay-free birth control and that Democrats are encouraging women to be “victims of their gender.” Huckabee made the comments during a speech at the Republican National Committee’s winter meeting on Thursday.
