New Mexico’s Democratic Congressional Delegation Joins Together for Marriage Equality

New Mexico’s Democratic Congressional delegation, Senator Tom Udall, Senator Martin Heinrich, Congressman Ben Ray Lujan, and Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham, the co-chair of the statewide campaign, have joined together in the historic effort to secure and defend the freedom to marry for all New Mexico families, and adding their voices in support for marriage equality.

“I enthusiastically support the freedom to marry for everyone in New Mexico,” said Senator Tom Udall. “Family comes first for all of us and that’s why it is imperative that we support all New Mexican families and work together to win marriage equality and defend it if we must.”

“I am very hopeful that the New Mexico Supreme Court will find that our constitution supports full equality for all our citizens,” said Senator Martin Heinrich. “Marriage is the foundation of a strong community and I will do all I can to secure and protect this freedom for loving gay and lesbian couples and their families.”

“Now that legally married same-sex couples can access the critical federal protections so necessary in times of stress and crisis, it is important to ensure that every couple can make that personal choice of marriage,” said Congressman Lujan. “Gay and lesbian couples make the same contributions and sacrifices that we all do, including paying taxes, owning business and caring for their families. It is time everyone is treated equally under the law.”

“When everybody is treated fairly in this state, every one of us benefits” said Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham. “When committed gay and lesbian couples can marry and enjoy the same benefits and responsibilities as everyone else, it strengthens families, protects children and expands freedom for us all. After the progress we’ve made in the past few weeks, I’m more confident than ever that full marriage equality is not a question of if, but when.”

Marriage Equality Campaign Manager Robert Adams thanked the members of New Mexico’s congressional delegation for leading the charge to secure marriage equality in New Mexico once and for all:

“We are extremely grateful to have Senators Udall and Heinrich, Congressman Lujan and Congresswoman Lujan Grisham onboard to support our work to win and defend marriage equality. Over 1600 same-sex couples have already married in New Mexico, and that fundamental freedom belongs to everyone in the state. New Mexico Unites for Marriage is committed to making that dream a reality.”
