Michelle’s Mailbox: Helping New Mexicans Impacted by the Government Shutdown

In this week’s Michelle’s Mailbox, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-CD1) discusses the impact to the House Republican shutdown on New Mexico. and the economic pain the GOP is causing working Americans, and what she is doing to help negatively impacted workers in her district:

“We are now 12 days into the reckless Republican government shutdown that is hurting many New Mexicans and that threatens to inflict even further harm if we do not reopen the government soon. Why is this happening? Because a few House Republican extremists think that repealing or defunding the Affordable Care Act is more important than America’s well-being.

“On top of all the pain the shutdown is causing, we are also just days away from reaching the point where America will not be able to pay its bills for the first time in history. A debt default could trigger an economic calamity even worse than the 2008 financial meltdown. New Mexico’s economy simply cannot afford to take that risk, which is why we must act now to avert another crisis.

“For this installment of Michelle’s Mailbox, I wanted to discuss what I’m doing to reopen the government and make sure America can pay its bills on time. I also wanted to talk about how I’m working with local banks, credit unions, utility companies and other community partners to help New Mexicans who are negatively impacted by the shutdown.”
