Welcome to Day Two: Health Insurance Marketplaces Are Open for Business

While Republicans have shut down the government, trying to stop uninsured Americans from gaining access to affordable health insurance, the Affordable Care Act, also called ‘Obamacare,’ went into effect as planned and is working to help provide every American access to quality, affordable health care.

Yesterday Obamacare expanded to help millions more Americans obtain better care at lower costs. Over three million people visited the Health Insurance Marketplaces on the first day they opened for business, far exceeding all expectations.

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, millions of Americans are already seeing benefits, including coverage for children previously denied due to preexisting conditions, access to free preventive care, no more arbitrary lifetime caps on coverage and other benefits already in place.

With the new Health Insurance Marketplaces open for business, Americans have access private insurance polices with more choices and at lower costs than ever before. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, uninsured Americans have access to affordable coverage and new protections—even if they’ve been denied coverage in the past because of pre-existing conditions.
