Thoughts from Sam: The Republican Attack on Middle Class New Mexicans

During recent weeks, national and state Republicans have decided to disrupt, scare and cut services to poor and middle class New Mexicans.

Their uncaring and greedy agenda is focused on hurting working families, still recovering from the terrible recession that began in 2008. Tea Party extremists, like Congressman Pearce, continue to vote against their constituents and struggling families by voting to cut $40 billion for food stamp assistance programs. Then, Mr. Pearce votes with the Tea Party to shut down all government services unless Obamacare is defunded. Congressman Pearce is a disgrace and embarrassment to New Mexico. Instead of standing up and supporting the 1 in 5 New Mexicans that rely upon food assistance, he pushes his constituents over a cliff.

If Congressman Pearce gets his way and the US government shuts down, New Mexicans will suffer along with millions of Americans:

  • Social Security benefits will be delayed or disrupted, and 57.5 million Americans will not receive their monthly Social Security payments in a timely manner.
  • Veterans’ benefits will be delayed and 3.4 million veterans will not receive service connected disability benefits on time.

Meanwhile, in Albuquerque Mayor Berry hides from voters and stays silent on the impact a government shutdown would have on city residents. In Santa Fe, not a peep from Governor Martinez, feverishly working, under the radar to dismantle NM state government so that Tea Party Republicans will let her have a national political career.

Where is the leadership and courage from Mayor Berry and Governor Martinez to stand up and say ‘enough is enough?’ Can either of you stand up for New Mexicans and protect our hard earned services and benefits?

Where is the leadership and courage to tell Gov. Jan Brewer to stay home and keep her prejudice and anti-immigrant policies in Arizona? (Gov. Brewer will be in ABQ September 27)

Fact: there is no leadership and no courage from Steve Pearce, Mayor Berry or Governor Martinez.

Enough is enough.
Step aside—we’re building the future.
