Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01), a member of the Congressional Native American Caucus, today announced that New Mexico Community Capital has been awarded a $406,019 grant to expand its Tribal Business Initiative throughout the state of New Mexico.
“This grant will help grow tribally-owned businesses and increase employment opportunities for tribal members,” Rep. Lujan Grisham said. “As tribal communities in New Mexico continue to recover from the economic downturn, these investments will lead to much-needed innovation and job creation.”
The grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Association (EDA), will help New Mexico Community Capital provide technical assistance in creating culturally-aligned, strategically-focused sustainable businesses. The initiative aims to reduce the skills gap for tribal employees and capitalize on emerging growth sectors such as energy, water and agriculture.
EDA grants are awarded through a competitive process based upon the application’s merit, the applicant’s eligibility, and the availability of funds.
