On Monday, September 2, 2013, U.S. Senator Tom Udall will be in Mora to discuss how federal investment can support local agriculture and promote rural economic development. There he will join Collaborative Visions, Los De Mora Local Growers Cooperative and Rural Communities Assistance Corp (RCAC) for a roundtable discussion and tour of a nearby organic farm.
At the roundtable discussion, Udall will talk with community leaders about how successful public-private partnerships have strengthened Mora’s rural economy and how they can continue to work together to support small businesses and sustainable agriculture. The roundtable will highlight the accomplishments resulting from a Rural Community Development Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that Udall supported to assist area farmers and local community development efforts.
Following the roundtable, Udall will visit the Ranchito Organic Farm to see how the federal funds have helped the agricultural community firsthand.
In 2012, RCAC received a $50,000 Rural Community Development Initiative grant for projects in three states, including New Mexico. From this grant, Los de Mora Growers Cooperative and Collaborative Visions received awards to assist local producers and empower rural communities to participate in building a sustainable leadership network to support the needs of local citizens and community-led projects.
A member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Udall is a long-time supporter of the USDA Rural Development program.
