Thoughts From Sam: August 27

A few days ago I had the pleasure of attending my first DNC meeting as Chairman, which was held in Arizona. This meeting was full of energy, commitment and demonstrated once again why we are Democrats: our coalition represents the people that make America work and on issue after issue, we stand on the right side of history and produce profiles in courage every day.

Last week, Lynn Ellins, the Dona Ana County Clerk made history when he decreed that marriage licenses will be issued to same-sex couples, effective immediately. Santa Fe County followed suit and Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver begins issuing licenses today. These three Democratic County Clerks are profiles in courage and while civil rights remain an ongoing struggle, no one is free until we all are free.

On August 26, we celebrated Women’s Equality Day which commemorates the certification of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. We honor the efforts of thousands of women of all races and cultures that fought for this basic human right. We are a better society and country because of their efforts. They remain a profile in courage.

Congressman Joaquin Castro will speak at the first DPNM “Rising Star” dinner, here in Albuquerque on September 6. This event, headlined by one of our country’s great future leaders, promises to make history and clearly illustrates the rainbow coalition that comprises the Democratic Party. Congressman Castro—another profile in courage.

Another event occurred last week that offers some hope to New Mexicans, devastated by Governor Martinez’s reckless decision to shut down provider services to 30,000+ men and women that are dependent upon mental health/substance abuse services. The Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) voted 15-1 against approving funds to hire 5 out-of-state Arizona companies. HSD did not need their approval but it gave legislators the opportunity to stand up to Governor Martinez and just say no. 6 Republicans—Sen. Beffort, Sen. Neville, Sen. Leavell, Rep. Tripp, Rep. White, and Rep. Larranaga joined all Democrats in opposing this Governor. DPNM thanks you for putting politics aside and saying yes to 30,000+ New Mexicans.

Building the future is slow, hard work. Thanks to the efforts of countless men and women throughout our state, we are moving forward. DPNM is leading the way on civil rights, health care, jobs and the issues that really matter to New Mexicans.

Step up and join thousands of Democrats all over New Mexico that are making history for us and our kids.

Today. Right now.
