We need to come together to back Doña Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins’ decision to issue same-gender marriage licenses. The members of the County Commission need to hear from us. On Tuesday, August 27, at 9:00 am, the Doña Ana County Commission will meet at the County Government Center, 845 N. Motel Blvd., Las Cruces, to decide on a resolution supporting our County Clerk. We need to be there.
Four years ago, we were caught flat-footed as right wing “astroturf” groups packed into public town hall forums and community meetings on clean energy, wilderness protection, and health care reform. Last year, the same groups embarrassed the community by parading through the streets with a Confederate flag. On Tuesday, they plan to pull the same stunts again. We can’t stand by and let them.
We need to show up and be counted. Let the Doña Ana County Commission know that the county, and New Mexico is a progressive, diverse, and welcoming community that respects each other’s human rights. This isn’t just about marriage equality; it is about equality period. Our LGBT brothers and sisters are members of this community; they live here, work here, and raise their families here. It is time to stand up alongside them and demand equality for every human being. Show up on Tuesday and make our voices heard. We stand with County Clerk Lynn Ellins.
